Keyless Entry which allows the vehicle to be unlocked from 30 feet or more.
WOW

7 previous owners, 141k miles. How much free time you got, and how good is your Porsche wrenching?

There’s nothing more expensive than a cheap German car

7 owners and none of them could take care of the headlights? I know people dislike the style but you still need them!

I can spend most of my evenings wrenching so there is that. Unless I need to drop the motor, I can do most of the other stuff myself.

Hmm. Even if I work on it myself?

That depends on the IMS bearing then. If it’s not done, that’s a big hurdle, as it's probably 2-3k. But if that's done, most other things are accessible, unlike on the boxster.

I’m guessing there is something bigly wrong with it; even high mile cars tend to fetch 10-12k.
Assuming it’s running and driving without anything actively failing it’s a good deal . Parts are pretty expensive. Anything shared with the boxster are more reasonable but still parts are never cheap.
Honestly; it’s probably worth a call but if the engine is no good then it’s not a deal. If it’s smoking then it could just be a failing AOS which wouldn’t be fatal.

For $6k I really wish I had more money/freedom right now haha . I would buy that in a heartbeat, I had 2 similar vintage boxsters, minus the big stuff like IMS the cars are pretty reliable. The only bad stuff is when you have to drop the motor...

Wasn’t the IMS issue present on motors built after 2000?

Gotcha. It's about 4 hrs away from my home so I'll probably take a look at it next weekend.

That’s what my limited research indicated.
Fortunately I'm in the karket for another car :)

If you want a cheap 911 get it. (assuming they’re not clearing codes on it daily or anything weird like that)

I want an autox car and I don't mind spending more money on one. Or I could buy thia cheap and spend money on parts for the 911.

Yes. You will not be able to diagnose many things on your own unless you have their software. You would need special tools. And here's the kicker... Parts are expensive if you want ones that don't suck.
![]() 01/27/2019 at 11:59 |

Is the software attainable on thr interwebs? Like INPA is?

Is that gap below the heated seat switch normal? If not my guess is the interior has been apart about 100 times trying to chas e down various electrical faults.

The 99 still has open bearings, just 2 row instead of one. The design flaw is still the same, the materials are just more robust.
Still risky IMO. The dual row failure rate was only 1% over 5 years, but that motor is now up to 20 years, and the bearing’s life is very dependent on oil quality (see 7 owners). But! It’s not my $6k.

How good are 996s for autox?
![]() 01/27/2019 at 12:30 |

No idea
![]() 01/27/2019 at 12:42 |

I’m guessing they are good, no concrete idea.

It would be my autox car so I don't car if all the interior electronics stop working.

It’s an IMS engine also known to have cylinder liner failures.
This thing needs a $10k+ engine.

I use a cheapo obd Bluetooth and app and it works for misfires, air intake rate, and other codes on my 996. Most issues can be diagnosed with a basic reader.

Aah I have that covered.

Except for the IMS(and this is a double row car) the cars are pretty well put together. Coils occasionally go and I feel like mine goes from one small oil leak to the next(I fix one and then another one springs up). This is going to sound a little crazy but even dropping the engine isn’t that bad.

I feel like a dumbass. I realized later in the day the OP was asking about 911’s of this vintage. I took one look at the pic and thought he was asking about Boxsters.
